As we navigate a season of increased flu and virus cases in ACS and Jordan, we would like to ask for your cooperation in maintaining the health and safety of our school community. Please review the important guidelines and reminders below to help us minimize the spread of illness:
If a student is coughing, sneezing, vomiting, or displaying other symptoms of illness, please send them to the Health Center immediately.
Students with symptoms such as upset stomachs, coughing, or sneezing will be sent home, even if they do not have a fever.
Parents will be instructed to keep students at home for at least 24 hours and monitor for further symptoms. If symptoms persist or worsen, please consult a doctor and let the Health Center know about the results.
Any student who has been sent home or has been absent due to illness must visit the Health Center for clearance before attending class. A written pass from the Health Center will be required for re-entry.
This measure ensures that students returning to school are symptom-free and reduces the risk of further transmission.
Before sending your child to school, please check for the following symptoms:
Fever (37.5°C/99.5°F or higher) or chills
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
Cough, fatigue, muscle aches, headache
Loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion, runny nose
Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
Encourage frequent hand washing and proper hygiene.
Utilize the alcohol-based hand sanitizers available throughout the school.
Avoid close physical contact, such as hugging or kissing, as a greeting.
Notify the Health Center promptly if your child or a family member is unwell.
Your cooperation is vital in ensuring a safe and healthy environment for everyone. Should you have any questions or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our Health Center at hjahshan@acsamman.edu.jo.

On Friday, August 23rd, the ACS Health Center set up a health corner at the PTG's Back-to-School Picnic. The event offered a variety of activities aimed at promoting health and wellness within the community.
Dr. Suha Khalifeh, a respected family physician and assistant professor at the University of Jordan, was on hand to provide expert advice. She spoke to parents about the importance of preventive healthcare, regular check-ups, and screening for chronic diseases. Additionally, Dr. Khalifeh offered free consultations to individuals with high blood pressure readings.
The ACS Health Center showcased its commitment to community health by providing information about its first aid services and educational programs. MedLabs was also present to conduct health screenings for attendees.
To encourage healthy eating habits, Blue Fig, the school's cafeteria food provider, participated in the picnic. They offered 250 food samples from their menu, giving parents a taste of the meals their children enjoy. The restaurant also sold popular items like hamburgers and shawarmas, which were a big hit.
The event's emphasis on preventative care and healthy living resonated with attendees. The positive feedback received from participants underscores the importance of such initiatives in fostering a healthier community.

We would like to thank you for your cooperation and help all through this school year. As you know, I am always a phone call or an email away for you to keep me updated with any medical concerns. Here are a few reminders to keep your family healthy and safe this summer:
Germs do not take vacations. They are tiny microscopic and annoying bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa that can cause many different diseases.
Since viruses can't survive and reproduce unless a person or an animal puts up rental space, they manage to move into someone's body and spread easily.
Viruses can make a person sick. Symptoms differ from headaches, general weakness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, colds, flu....etc and it can be either one symptom or more than one.
Wash hands regularly as it's very important to prevent germs from leading to infections and sickness. We also encourage healthy eating habits, drinking plenty of water during hot summer days, sleeping, exercising, and cleanliness.
I would like to wish you a safe and fun summer and I look forward to seeing you all back safe and sound.

Whenever there is an event on campus, the Health Center takes measures to ensure the safety and immediate first aid care for our community.
The Health Center receives the schedules, including the names of students and guests that are participating with any medical alerts, allergies, and medications they may be taking
First Aid kits and medications are prepared to be ready on location in case of an emergency
The location is assessed and the Jordanian Civil Defense is informed of the event in case there is a need to transfer the injured person to the hospital for further medical care
The Nurse and Sports Therapist are on campus through the event for quick and first responder services
At the end of the event, reports are provided to coaches and parents on all injuries and actions taken.
The Health Center needs to be present during events on campus. For example, during a tournament on campus, a guest player was injured and assessed by the school Nurse. Upon examination, it was determined that the athlete needed further medical intervention and an ambulance was called. Within 8 minutes, the injured athlete was in the hospital with specialized doctors waiting in the emergency room for quick assessment and treatment.
The Health Center's goal is to keep our community and our guests safe while they are on campus. With our positive team spirit and quick response, the Health Center is ready to serve at all events!

We would like to celebrate the new automated registry system at the Health Center where students and staff sign in before seeing a nurse. This enables us to collect, store, and analyze information on the health status and care of students and staff.
The new process will help:
monitor the number of students and staff visiting the office
identify and address main health issues and needs
provide feedback on care given
support health promotion and prevention programs and policies in school
effective management of resources and referrals and follow-up on students and staff
An automated system will help us improve the quality and safety of school health services and the overall well-being of our community.

Recently, we have had a few cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease. It is a type of coxsackievirus syndrome that causes painful red blisters in the throat and on the tongue, gums, hard palate, inside of the cheeks, and the palms of hands and soles of the feet. These viruses live in the human digestive tract.
The usual period from initial infection to the onset of signs and symptoms (incubation period) is three to six days. A fever is often the first sign of hand-foot-and-mouth disease, followed by a sore throat and sometimes a poor appetite and malaise.
In most cases, coxsackieviruses cause mild flu-like symptoms and go away without treatment.
ACS Protocols for Hand Food Mouth
If you notice blisters around the mouth and/or palms of the hands, please contact the school. It's important for school staff and other parents to know so they can watch for similar symptoms.
Keep your child home from school or childcare until they have gone 24 hours without a fever and the mouth sores and open blisters have healed. The Health Center must approve your child's return to class after a general checkup in our clinic along with a medical note from the doctor that your child is cleared to return.
Contact the Health Center for more information.

Last week there was an injury on campus when a visiting student was hit by a ball during the soccer tournament and needed medical attention on the field. The area was quickly secured, our Nurse on duty immediately followed the protocols to check on the student, and an ambulance was called to transport the student to the hospital for medical follow-up. The student was in the hospital less than 10 minutes from the time of injury. Thankfully the student is well with no serious injuries.
This incident reassured our community that our Health Center is well equipped with all the necessary equipment that is needed in an emergency, we are trained and ready to be first responders, and that injured individuals can be transported in minimal time to nearby hospitals for immediate care.
This is a reminder that the Health Center offers First Aid & CPR classes to our community. Click here to learn more about how you can become certified and ready to save lives!

With every field trip within and outside of Jordan, the Health Center takes measures to ensure that we continue to provide comprehensive health care to the students and chaperones.
All teams are provided with First Aid kits that match the medical needs for the trip and for the students and chaperones that have medical alerts. A Nurse accompanies local field trips when students with medical alerts participate to ensure that proper medical care is available in case of an emergency and to administer prescribed medications to students.
The Health Center also establishes close contact with medical services and ambulances close to field trip locations for immediate care in case of an emergency.
For international trips, the Health Center provides accompanying adults with information and health kits to ensure traveling students have their medication available. Chaperones remain in close contact with Nurse Hiyam to monitor health issues when necessary.

We are heading into flu season and have already had a small handful of people out with COVID. Please remember that everyone should stay home when sick. Individuals should only return to school when fever-free without the help of medication for a full 24 hours.
Even after a fever passes, sometimes a cough persists. In such cases, regardless of the illness, we ask that individuals wear masks to protect our community. Should you have any questions or require any support, please call me at school numbers, 065813944/6 ext. 225 or email the Health Center.

The Health Center has been doing vision screening for all elementary school students. This is only a simple screening and by no means conclusive. If there is a concern about your child's vision, you will receive a letter from the Health Center.
Over 150 students in middle and high school went through complete physical checkups before joining ACS's athletic teams for Season 1 to ensure they were in appropriate shape and ensure the physical safety of our students.
The checkup included evaluating the medical history of the student, including scoliosis, and abnormalities in joints, head, hips, and chest as well as heart health.
